Adapted after the French magazine Le Bridgeur‘s column “Hand of the Month”, May-June 2019.
This hand was nominated for best played hand of 2018.
IMPs, all vulnerable.
Comments on the bidding
North-South have agreed to play the 1NT overcall as strong and natural. It certainly lacks the stop in hearts, but it is the practical bid given the system. The 3♠ bid is optimistic, but the perspective of a vulnerable game is irresistible.
The lead
West leads the King of Clubs (East follows with the 6).
The problem
Diamonds are very likely to split badly, with Jack fourth in West, who opened 1♦. In addition, slim hope to ruff a Heart because the defense will not fail to play trump at the first opportunity.
