The Partnership of Buffett & Bill

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are perhaps two of the most recognizable investors and philanthropists in the modern world. The two also happen to be great friends – and when it comes to bridge, they might be some of our most well-known players.

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are both Honorary Members of the ACBL. If I’ve heard right, they both play a pretty damn good bridge game.

Here are some gems from the partnership of Buffett & Bill.

From GatesNotes, Bill’s personal website and blog, here’s his take on what makes for a good bridge partner. It’s got some great advice on how to choose the right partner – and how to respond better to yours.

This one comes from Washington Post – and has been more widely quoted than attributed (!) in several other sources that were actually originally from this interview. Here’s a great interview with Sharon Osberg, one of BBO’s own and provider of bridge instruction to the Partnership of Buffett and Bill over the years.

A great blast from the past, here’s coverage of the world’s first Online Bridge World Cup in 2016. The game was played online, but in person with the use of screens separating players – and I think we might be able to find a clue to deterring modern bridge cheating in how this game was played.

Oh, and Bill’s drink choice? Diet Coke, just in case you were wondering. (My parents used to yell at me for cans next to the keyboard, and here is the founder of Microsoft doing it; hah!)

This interview is from 2017 between journalist Thomas Heath and Warren Buffett. Again, widely quoted in many financial markets, though the original interview appears here from the Washington Post.

What got Warren Buffett into more bridge? According to this, it was a mixture of Sharon Osberg and computers. Bill had pressed Buffett into getting a computer for years – and when he finally did, online bridge was only the most natural choice.

Here’s a gem from Alan Truscott: Coverage of the Mixed Team Championship (2000). Bill played, and Buffett was meant to (but missed out due to post-surgical recovery time). It’s great coverage – even though the game itself didn’t proceed as planned.
