5 Thrilling Card Flicks for Movie Night

I wouldn’t survive the average day without background noise.

There’s always something playing in the background, whether it’s a 60’s rock playlist or Netflix.

The great part about this is the sheer amount of movies and TV shows I’ve managed to see up to this point (and I’m sure there will be many more to add for the rest of this lifetime).

Time for movie night?

Here are some great card flicks for card players looking .

#1: Il Cartaio (The Card Player)

Trailer: YouTube

Il Cartaio is a 2004 movie that falls into the realm of thriller more than it does supernatural horror – and depending on your preference, you’ll either want to see this movie first or last. I love a good procedural thriller, and if you love movies like Se7en, then you’ll very likely enjoy this.

#2: Stephen King’s IT

When I refer to Stephen King’s IT, I’m talking about the original miniseries starring Tim Curry as Pennywise.

If you don’t already have an existential fear of spiders, clowns, sewers, hats, mummies or dark places, then seeing this movie is what you’re going to attribute to giving you these fears.

It’s iconic, great and terrifying. (Yes, it tops the remake.)

Where do cards fit in? Don’t forget the iconic “Bicycle” scene.

#3: Lord of Illusions

Trailer: YouTube

I’m a big fan of Clive Barker’s horror.

He’s Books of Blood, the Midnight Meat Train, Clive Barker’s Undying – and a lot of great horror fiction that doesn’t rely on jump scares, but on truly intricate stories.

Lord of Illusions (1995) is based on his short story The Last Illusion.

(If you haven’t guessed, it features one of the best things you can do with cards: illusion)

#4: Poker Night

Trailer: YouTube

Horror and poker make a great blend – and I’m surprised that there aren’t more horror movies about poker games. (Though if readers know of more, I’m certainly listening…)

Poker Night has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s not bad, and it can go towards one side or the next; either you’re going to love this, or not.

Imagine Saw, but with poker.

Actually, read the synopsis, “To survive, he has to use all of the knowledge imparted to him by veteran detectives during poker nights.”

#5: Now You See Me

Trailer: YouTube

Here’s another great movie for fans of illusion – and any fans of heist-style movies. (I happen to be both.)

Now You See Me mixes card magic and what you can do with misdirection. It’s thrilling, but without being a traditional thriller. Like I’ve said, it’s a typical great heist flick that should catch your eye if you’re a card player.
