I’ve had the titular song stuck in my head for the bulk of this week, and decided to follow the trail to see where it goes from there.
The search for the song soon turned into a closer look at Las Vegas, movies and books that have mentioned the state – and how to get around for a bridge game.
Here follows resources for navigating Vegas bridge. How to find games, how to get there and what should be on your watch-list.
Las Vegas Bridge World
Las Vegas Bridge World is one of the first places where Vegas bridge players go – and they don’t mind visiting members. It’s a bridge club based out of Vegas, and the first phone call you’ll need to make if you’d like to find out where to play local bridge in Vegas.
The Vegas App
Struggling to navigate Vegas? Well, there’s the Vegas Mobile App.
This tells you about restaurants, travel and more closeby. The app even allows for direct ordering or booking through the app to get where you need to be.
It’s an essential for getting around, unless you’d rather opt for Google Maps and throwing the names of restaurants into a hat to choose one.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a book that was recommended to me as a young journalist (Thanks, Melt Sieberhagen!) – and I’ve always tried to pass on the recommendation to others.
It’s a damn great book. It’s the defining book for Gonzo journalism. It’s something I think every fan of journalism should read – and if you love Vegas (and/or psychedelics), this will grab you.
Don’t just see the movie. Read the book.
Vegas Vacation (1997)
Vegas Vacation is one of those movies that you’ll either like very much (or not at all). If you’re a fan of Chevy Chase or National Lampoon, it should be all good. If you were a fan of Chevy Chase, then it’s likely you’ll have seen it already, but it’s also just as likely that you’ll watch it again. Watch the trailer on YouTube
What can I say? It’ a movie that happens to capture Vegas and practically take you there.
Vegas on TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor is almost an obligatory stop in the age of the internet. Before showing up to anywhere, check out their reviews and see what’s good.
I guess it’s like today’s equivalent of having to call up a friend and ask them which restaurants are the best (and worst) in town. Results are usually reliable, though also check a couple of other sites for reviews before heading out.
Viva Las Vegas (1964)
I couldn’t write this post and skip mentioning Viva Las Vegas, the original 1964 great movie starring none other than Elvis Presley.
Again, it’s just a piece of history that’s quintessentially Vegas.
It’s also the kind of movie that deserves to be seen more than once. Watch the trailer on YouTube
