5 Signs That Someone Is A Bridge Player

Forget about everything you might know about bridge as a big pastime in the 1930s. The game of bridge is huge and booming right now.

Can you recognise a fellow bridge player?

I’ve noticed that the number of people who play bridge is on the increase.

Kids play bridge, their parents play bridge, their grandparents play bridge. Now, there are people who Google bridge as a card game first instead of bridge as an architectural monument.

One more thing I’ve noticed is that bridge players have a keen sense for spotting others.

It’s like Spider-Man’s sense for danger. Only, it goes off whenever another bridge player happens to be close.

Can you spot the other bridge player in a crowd of other people?

Here are 5 signs that someone is a bridge player.

1: They’ll Tell You

Bridge players love talking about the game.

The bidding, the playing, the scandals.

If you have a suspicion that someone might be a bridge player in their spare time, just say the words “bridge”, “bid”, “dummy”, “trump”, or “Stayman” near them and wait.

The conversation practically takes off by itself from there.

2: They Arrange (All) Their Cards

Whether they’re holding credit cards or business cards, bridge players can’t help but arrange them. First, they’ll glance, then they’ll move them around.

It’s a habit that bridge players pick up when they’re sorting through their hand. It happens as a subconscious action that I’ve noticed many bridge players continue doing away from the table.

3: They Won’t Even Giggle At The Word “Rubber”

The word “rubber” has a lot of meanings.

Okay, one of them refers to condoms. Bridge players have (mostly) gotten over the fact that this is funny.

Ask a bridge player for a rubber, and there’s not even a giggle.

Ask anyone else, and it’s a completely different situation.

4: But They Do Giggle At The Word “Trump”

The word “rubber” isn’t funny to most bridge players.

But their response to the word “trump” might lead to humour.

Politics isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when the term trump shows up around a table.

Instead, bridge players think bids, numbers, and cards.

5: They Like Tables

A table is as essential to a bridge game as the card deck.

Whenever a bridge player notices a table, they’ll naturally start moving towards it. It’s almost like bringing a magnet closer to a fridge.

Spotted a bridge player near a table?

Ask them for a rubber.

(You’ll thank me later.)
