2 great tabletop & card films to see right now

One thing that seems to be true for most bridge players is that they are, in some or another way, fans of the tabletop endeavour in general.

I encourage bridge players to dip their hands into other games, including trading-card varieties, It enhances your strategy, teaches you to think in other ways, and expands what you can do at the bridge table.

But it’s not all serious business, all the time.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy (or insane, if you’re going by Jack Torrance in The Shining).

Take a break, have a breather, and check out some of these great tabletop & card films to see right now.

21: The movie 21 is based around the true story of the MIT Blackjack Team. Armed with math, guts, and loose morals, they took to Vegas to recreate the plot of The Wizard Of Oz, but with playing cards. While they got rich from it, they also got caught doing it. Here’s their story.

AlphaGO: AlphaGO is an excellent documentary about the board game of GO – and the artificial intelligence powering it. Watch it if you are at all interested in computers, computer science, or the algorithms behind what makes a computerized mind play better.

Clue: If you like Clue (called Cluedo in some parts of the world), there’s a fictional movie based around the game’s plot. Without giving away too much, any fans of the game will appreciate classic elements found on the board appearing in the movie – and yes, they actually made a great film.

Game Night: Game Night is more than your typical situational comedy movie. It’s a good one. Game Night happens to be filled from one scene to the next with board game references – and general chaos. What happens when a friendly game night goes horribly south? This.

Jumanji: Even though Jumanji was continued with The Rock, I still prefer the original by far. If you’ve still never seen it, watch this classic Robin Williams movie as soon as possible. What happens when a board game becomes very, very real when you’ve picked up a card? Well, Jumanji.

Monsters & Mazes: Monsters & Mazes was the first movie Tom Hanks ever starred in. Watch it, because it’s also one of the weirdest (and I’m sure even he might want to forget this). It was made back when Board Games Were Considered Evil – and it’s filled with every cautionary tale about tabletop games and evil you can imagine. Unintentionally hilarious, and worth seeing at least once.

Now You See Me: I’ve included the movie Now You See Me on so many lists that people might guess I’m a fan already. This is what you get when the excitement of an Oceans heist movie meets Derren Brown the mentalist in terms of the plot. Exciting, flashy, and heavily featuring cards.

Pawn Sacrifice: Pawn Sacrifice is a tale that’s heavily loaded with politics, paranoia, and sports. It stars Tobey Maguire, and it’s worlds better than Seabiscuit (the other, other sports movie he was very unfortunately in). Here’s the story of Bobby Fischer and high-stakes, politically driven chess. Enjoy.

Rain Man: Are there people here who haven’t seen Rain Man yet, or who don’t know the reference as a result? It’s such a classic that I almost find it difficult to imagine. I won’t reveal anything else, just watch it!

The House: The blend of Amy Poehler and Will Ferrel makes this a must-see for people who are fans of either. What happens when you can’t pay for your kid’s college education? Gain the house edge at your own house by converting it into an adult gaming arcade. (Or don’t, it goes badly.)

Queen Of Katwe: The Queen Of Katwe is a chess biopic based on a true story – and it shows that champion players could be hiding anywhere in the world, right now, but just need a chance to prove it. It’s inspiring, and worth watching more than once.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: This list wouldn’t feel complete without including at least one great TCG film in the mix. The original Yu-Gi-Oh! films are a good start, even though they veered away from the accuracy of the decks you’ll see in the TV-series. It’s enough to excite almost anyone who enjoys a competitive card game.
