Comic book characters with cards

Playing cards are a regular sight within pop culture.

I’m always looking out for any blatant references to card decks, tarot, poker games, and bridge with constant attention.

Anywhere there’s a reference, there lies a potential nod from one card-playing enthusiast to any others. References might go unnoticed to anyone who doesn’t play cards, but if you do, you’ll always see them, too.

If you look closely enough, you’ll even find several bridge gags hidden within several seasons of The Simpsons.

The playing card deck is integral to the stories of several infamous villains and famous superheroes from comic books.

Here’s a look at 4 comic book characters with cards.

1. The Joker

  • DC Comics

The Joker is a classic villain, initially conceived from a raw sketch of a distorted Joker on a playing card.

Since his introduction in the 40s, the Joker has seen several different versions (and been portrayed by more than a handful of different actors and voice artists).

First versions of the Joker’s character were dark, though later became toned down. Recent versions of the character seems to have brought him back to the darker side of things.

It’s not just his name that puts him on this list, but his love for odd weapons and traps with a playing card theme.

2. Gambit

  • Marvel Comics

Gambit was first introduced to comic book audiences in 1990, and originally appeared in the X-Men Universe.

From Louisiana, Remy LeBeau had his start as a thief, and joined the X-Men as a reformed mutant who switched sides.

Gambit’s power?

He’s a real killer when he throws a playing card.

3. Bullseye

  • Marvel Comics

Bullseye first appeared in the mid-70s within the Daredevil series, and has made occasional appearances through comic books, series’, and movies related to the hero ever since.

Originally a professional baseball player, Bullseye was banned for life after throwing a baseball at another player’s head – and killing them in the process.

Later, Bullseye is recruited as a professional assassin

He also happens to be a keen practitioner of playing card throwing.

If you’re wondering by this point in the post, playing card throwing is a very real skill.

4. The Thing

  • Marvel Comics

The Thing is one quarter of the Fantastic Four, and has been with the series since the first issue in 1961.

Also known as Ben Grimm, the character is relied on for his superior strength (though also his demeanour in tough situations).

What puts him on this list is his regular love for card games, especially poker, which makes an appearance throughout the comics.

At least he’s one comic book character who plays with his cards instead of just throwing them at people. Can you name any card playing characters from comic books or other fiction?
