Interview with a bridge player

I’ve recently come back to reading Interview With A Vampire again, and I’ve spent the past couple of days stuck on the soundtrack for Queen Of The Damned for background noise.

While these might have nothing to do with bridge, the title of the eternally great Rice-novel made me imagine an appropriate post for the Prime column.

Interviews with experts and champion players always have something to say, and something useful to teach. While interviews aren’t heavy in theory, they’re particularly laden with tips and good advice.

Here’s where to find classic interviews with bridge players.

In Two Minutes: An EBU Interview

From the English Bridge Union, here’s a booklet containing several two-minute Q&A interviews about bridge with some of the world’s leading experts and game celebrities.

Among others, this includes greats Louis Sachar, Kosha Engler, Dennis Amiss, and others sharing their very valuable two-cents on bridge.

Sheffield Morning Program

Here’s an engaging radio interview from BBC with Simon Woolham (the Chair of Sheffield BC) and Davild Guild (from the YCBA) about bridge and what the current scene looks like. Listen to the podcast of the interview at the link above.

An Interview With Gavin Wolpert

This interview is from the Neapolitan Club’s website, and forms part of coverage surrounding the 40th World Bridge Championships. If you want to know more about the playing strategies and mindset of champion Gavin Wolpert, you’ll find some great advice contained here.

An Interview With Mike Lawrence

Mike Lawrence is a bridge legend, and if you don’t agree with this statement, you haven’t seen all that many of his games yet… Here’s an interview from BridgeBum with Mike Lawrence about how he approaches the game and personal playing strategies.

An Interview With Fred Gitelman

Fred Gitelman is one of the founding members of Bridge Base Onilne, and I was lucky enough to interview him upon his retirement. Here’s the entire interview. To date, one of the greatest ones I’ve had the pleasure to conduct!

Bridge Guys: An Interview With Eric Rodwell

If you dig though any list of notable bridge players, you’ll find Rodwell’s name. He’s one of the most prominent players of our time – and this is one of the best interviews that examines how he played his way there. From BridgeGuys, you’ll find this interview hosted as a downloadable document.
