Liver-Worst

On Saturday, May 30, me and Batman (Adam Burton) played Dayton’s MVB Center club game on BBO.

Right away up popped a solid 9-bagger!

I’m shocked that I was the only North of 16 who opened 1! (bridge is changing). After partner’s 1♠, now should I :

  1. seek the perfect MasterPlan to help evaluate our slam chances? Or
  2. “SEEK-a-SYKE” (some devious, evil attempt to blow-up their bidding, opening lead, and/or defense? Or
  3. the dull 4 rebid?

Always the anarchist, I squeezed out a lame 2 rebid and wow, did I lay an egg! — OVER & OUT! 🙁 Down -150.

This atrocity is maybe the single LIVER-WORST bid of my 55+ year toomimint bridge career — Batman agreed with disgust. I lost $6, 1/2 an ACBL Monsterpoint, respect, (and maybe a partnership?).

I had the right idea, but I overlooked the better stroke of 3, not 2. Then 4 next says it all, eh?

This board caused a ruckus at many tables, featuring hilarious permutations in bidding, opening leads, play, and defense. Fertile bridge-brains created 6 different opening actions!

mo1243 (Marilyn O’Connor, the Bully) opened a sharp 2♣ +450. So did effie 10 (Stef GingerSnap) +480.

sandyrf (Forsythe) tried 4♣! As did BCRPro (Brian Ross, with DrDallas) +480 — only because both pairs play the DREADED NUMNUTZ (4♣ = a jumbo-sized 4 preempt)

The strangest opener? bobcatjd (the inprepid Sandy Dennis) invented the astounding blockbuster bid of 5!! +450. What does THAT mean? What chapter is THAT in? I guess she thought it was an “inevitable” not-vul “advance sacrifice” over vul opp’s (“not-cold”) 4♠ — so, let’s do it RIGHT NOW to save lots of time, agony, bitterness, and “DY-REC-TOR” calls later. (Certainly not wrong.)

But “Mister Sneaky” was hobpro (Roy Hobson from Columbus). Remember that rogue? His finger tickled his PASS button – followed quickly by P-P-P!! Sweet justice served! 🙂 His partner sharpbws (Brad Sharp) was NOT impressed. But he sure beat one enemy — sadly, it is US 🙁

MASTER SOLVER’S CLUB RATINGS: 1=100 2♣=90 (for many good reasons) 4♣=80 4=50 Pass=25 5 is OFF-THE-CHART:)

A bit of bad luck at matchpoints because you sorta expect a preference or 2S or more.

I think that using exclusion RKC might fill the bill in a practiced partnership (4C) since you know what to do if pard has more than one, or none. Don’t we just hate matchpoints? Being a team player I sure do at times…

4C is spade splinter, so exclusion RKB 5C? So why isn’t that for spades too? But it seems way too rash anyway – it doesn’t address the potential 3 losers in D

Those opening 2C violated the rules concerning 2C opening bids – people do not realize it – but that is NOT a legal 2C bid, and a competent director would change the score if opponents knew enough to call him.

Why not? It has only 4 loosers …

Yes. Why not 2c? I was taught it’s over 22HCP or 8.5 quick tricks

At present, it is ABSOLUTELY legal to open 2!C with any hand that is within 1 trick of game. I railed against that myself for decades, but now it is codified. Check it out at ACBL Rulings.

        i.e. D: KQxxxxxxxxx (11th) and 2 stiffs! Ridiculous, eh? 🙁

I enquired about a similar 2C made in a club game. The club director consulated a high ranking director. The definition of 2C is below. So I believe that this hand does not meet the definition.

A ‘Very Strong’ hand ( allows it be opened artificial 2C)
    20+ HCP ( not upgradeable)
Within 1 trick of game with normal splits, provided you have either
    14+ HCP or 5+ controls
    I.e. 9 quick tricks in a major

Every director at every level “thinks” he knows the regulations. Trouble is, there many different versions.often based on geography or clientele. And the ACBL changes them up periodically, and doesn’t bother to update the Rulebook or the website. Those criteria would be perfectly acceptable.. Problem is, its complicated. Prone to interpretation. And inevitably applied prefenetially. So the rules need to be always emphasized beforehand at every club and tournament The ACBL should distribute a “cuurent procedures” checklist for recurring ruling problems.

Another example of the arbitrary changeability of ACBL rules is:
S:J22 H:J22 D:AKQJT9 C:Q is a perfectly acceptable 1NT opener, despite stoppers in only 1 suit, and the slight upgrade – because there’s only 1 shortness and the stiff is a Q! Whereas, now,-
S:KQT9 H:QJT9 D:KQJT C:J is subject to an automatic penalty (and further jeopardy) as soon as the director is informed of the 1NT opener!

Only 3 losers. 2 clubs can be opened with 4 losers or less. two clubs is the perfect bid

Hi, new to this site. Is there a reason why I can’t see any images?

  7. mikelski

Ignore my last post. One image has now appeared. I take it the next one will be along in the next hour or so…

    1H, 4C or 4H possible bids.
    2C not legal.
    If 1H, your next bid is 4H or a opps.suit Q.
