I doubt the answer to question 11 is correct, or you miss stated the question with “Maximize the expected number of tricks possible, based on the combination of cards your partnership holds in a given suit.”… your line is safety play for 4 tricks
The answer to 11 is correct. Expected number is a reference to the mathematical idea of expected value, which we would calculate for a given play by summing the product of a number of tricks taken and its likelihood for that play (Here we sum over all possibilities from 0 to 4 tricks … noting that the probability of taking 0 tricks is 0 so this doesn’t change our calculation). So while we may be tempted to run the Q (my incorrect answer) in an attempt to take 4 tricks, the probability of taking 4 tricks on this line is very low and we have a much higher likelihood of taking only 2 tricks if we do this. No line gives a high percentage chance of taking 4 tricks, so we maximize our expected number of tricks by giving ourselves the best shot at taking 3 tricks. Of course if you need 4 tricks and are playing IMPs, by all means I would take the unlikely chance.
As previous poster said. In question 11 correct answer depends on whether you try for 3 or 4 tricks.
