Online lists that’ll help you learn bridge

Lists are great, and there are a lot of things you can do with them.

If you want to organize things better, you’ll need a list. If you wanted to know which movies to watch this week, search engines will provide you with an assortment of lists as an answer. If you had arch-enemies, keeping a list might even come to mind.

The popularity of the simple, ordered ten commandments should illustrate just how widely-read the list can be. Even through history, people have found lists useful.

What about lists for bridge? Bridge terminology, conventions, magazines, or rules are just some of the things you might wonder about. The answer can be found on a list. It’s excellent for reference, and recommended for learning more about bridge.

Here are some of the best online lists that’ll help you learn bridge.

ABF Library List

The Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) has a useful library list hosted on their website. If you need a point-of-reference for bridge books or a quick reading list that tells you where to start, you will want to visit here. Classics are covered, and new releases are added over time.

Bridge Terminology

Words like “dummy” and “kibitzer” can sound like insults (or brands of cat food) if you aren’t used to bridge terminology. If you are still getting to know the ins-and-outs of bridge, a specific list of bridge terms is a recommended start. You’ll be less confused in the midst of conversations about the game!

Bridge Magazines

Bridge resources include magazines and e-zines about contract bridge. If you’re a frequent reader of these, you can find a comprehensive list of magazines hosted at Great Bridge Links. Archives are listed here too, so you can track down back issues or bridge magazines from the past.

Bidding Conventions

Bridge Bum is home to one of the most comprehensive lists of bidding conventions out there. As a reference list, it’s excellent (and as one meant for learning conventions, it’s even better). Heard of a bridge convention you don’t know yet? Almost guaranteed, you’ll see it listed here.

Commonly Used Conventions

If you would like a smaller list to start off with, find the ACBL resource listing Commonly Used Conventions at this link. While it’s not as comprehensive as Bridge Bum, it’s reliable for any players who need an introduction (or refresher) to which conventions will appear most often.

Great Bridge Resources

For Dummies is not just a series of reference books, but also has resources to accompany their texts. For every book, you’ll find appropriate details to expand what you might have learned. Even if you have not read the book itself, additional resources are always useful.

Here’s a list of appropriate resources for contract bridge. Finding a bridge partner? Best sites for bridge? You’ll find it all here.

The World Bridge Federation Bridge Zones

The World Bridge Federation has its organizations split up into several world zones. If you’re looking for organizations in your country or area representing bridge, this is an essential place to start. Follow the link to see which organizations fall under which bridge zone.

Rules

Bridge rules are argued about often. At informal or infrequent bridge games, it’s normal to get stuck on fine points and rule remembrances. Not sure if you remember scoring right, or how to start a game? Pagat lists simple, easy-to-understand rules for many games (including bridge in several of its different forms).

The ACBL just redesigned their website, so many of those links are now broken.
